How Aromatherapy Works

What is Aromatherapy?

In simple terms, Aromatherapy is a unique treatment that focuses on soothing, calming and uplifting an individual through inhalation and massage of pure floral essences.

Ideal for Spiritual, Therapeutic and Hygienic Purposes

For centuries, the ancient Chinese, Indians, Egyptians, Greeks and Romans knew that massaging essential oils into the skin and breathing in the aromatic aromas was ideal for spiritual, therapeutic and hygienic purposes. Dating back over 6,000 years, Aromatherapy has been used to heal and cleanse the body bringing it into balance and releasing any impurities. Today, Aromatherapy has once again gained worldwide attention, as it has become the finest natural treatment for alleviating stress, tension, insomnia and other health issues.

The Gift of Essential Oils

Essential oils have different scents as well as specific therapeutic properties and each essential oil is selected to suit an individual’s requirements. Taken from the blossoms of plants, fruits, roots, leaves and seeds, the essential oil used in Aromatherapy contains a mixture of ingredients, with each focusing on a particular health issue or problem. For example, some essential oils are applied to promote physical healing whereas other essential oils are used to relieve stress and encourage relaxation.

Mental/Emotional Effect

According to some expert studies, it is believed that the sense of smell plays a major role in Aromatherapy as the “smell” receptors in the nose communicate with parts of the brain, the part that stores memories and emotions. As the vapors are inhaled, it causes the oils to be absorbed through the tissues in the nose, mouth and respiratory system. This is followed by the aroma being transmitted through the body into the blood stream or other parts of the body.

It is believed that when one breathes in the aroma of essential oils, it stimulates the part of the brain that influences physical, emotional, and mental health. Others believe that essential oils may interact with hormones or enzymes. In either case, when the body absorbs the therapeutic grad essential oils during massage or inhaling it helps participants to cope with every day tensions, stresses and insomnia.
